It Happens...

You’ve been beavering away on a document.  You’re making good progress but now it’s time to get up, make a coffee and while you do that you think about what you’ll do next.  You make the coffee and a few good ideas pop into your head, so you settle back down and get back into your work.  The caffeine is doing its job and you’re on a roll.  You reach for another sip without looking properly and the mug slips and bam!  All over your laptop!

Depending on several factors, such as your reaction time, what you do with that reaction time and how much gravity helps the coffee get into the inner workings of your machine, will determine what damage happens to it.  As a rule, these principals are fairly constant:

Computers don’t like wet, they’re electronic.

Coffee is wet.

Water is wet too but coffee is water with a whole lot or other gunk in it that you might like, but computers generally don’t.

Enter the Nerds.  We have dealt with these scenarios many times before and have been able to achieve a variety of outcomes, such as a total repair with data recovery, repair without data recovery, total replacement due to damage done but with data recovery and, the worst scenario, total replacement without data recovery.

Whatever the scenario, however, we can produce a letter for you to pass to your insurer with our diagnosis of the damage and recommended action to assist with your claim.  We will add to this our estimate of replacement costs and work to recover data, transfer data and setup new hardware as appropriate.

Now that we have got you thinking about how you would deal with this scenario, think also about what measures you have taken to protect your data in the first place.  If you are using cloud storage, chances are your changes have been dynamically synchronising as you type which means less work (and expense) for us to do to recover your data.

Also, backups are important too even if you are using cloud storage.  Besides the threat of hacking, scams etc. it can also be quicker to restore from local media if you have been backing up to that.  See our blog about backups for further information.

We don’t want this to happen to you, but if it does, we’re here to help.  0800 63 33 26 (NEEDANERD).  At some time, everyone “Needs a Nerd.”
